So, I guess I didn't write how Matthew's first week of summer school went. So far, pretty good.. at least as far as I know. On Tuesday, David took the day off so we could all take Matthew in. It took me a bit to drop him off, because I didn't want to leave him there before his teachers arrived (they were outside taking some of his classmates off the bus). I think I waited with him for about a half hour, then introduced myself to his main teacher, Lauren. She is young, but seems really nice. Then David and I took Lauren (our daughter LOL) to breakfast, before the 10 am orientation for new parents. Basically the lady who heads the summer program discussed the activities they provide for the children, and things like that. There was a tour, but we didn't take it because we'd already been through the building. At 11, we got Matthew from class. His teacher said he didn't have any fits or anything. Wednesday, I guess he didn't want to join in with the music activities until he heard the Wiggles music (oh Lord), and Friday there was a struggle to get him to keep his shoes on to go play outside. Other than that, there has been no mention of any serious behavioral issues. That's certainly good to know. If there are, I'm guessing we'll get a referral to the on-site Behavior Therapist (or whatever she's called).

I just got back from picking him up from his class. No real comments re: anything in particular, though I did speak with the summer Speech Therapist. She came into the classroom to evaluate Matthew for the speech/language portion of his MFE (multi-factored evaluation). She said that based on what she saw today, he probably will be able to get into the (developmentally delayed) pre-school with no problem. Now, this is the only time she's ever met Matthew, or probably will ever meet him. She said that while he was very good with labeling things- colors, shapes, etc- that he was not consistent with labeling objects. Sometimes he would, sometimes he would point to the wrong thing, etc. She did say that it probably didn't help that he'd never met her before, and that he was probably being distracted by his environment (think how busy a school of kids must be, compared to the quiet of a home environment, where he would usually work with a therapist). Let's not forget the fact that sometimes when he's being "worked with", he doesn't always do things he's asked to do. He will wait til the end of the session and simply do everything he was asked to do before. Typically when the lady is packing up her stuff and has one foot out the door. LOL. BUT, I guess this means we know (most likely) he will be in pre-school this fall.

I know he isn't "slow" or seriously (developmentally) challenged. It will be good for him, too. Summer session is real laid back. Pre-school will be much more structured, and more will be expected of him, I'm guessing (as much as pre-school can be). I still have nothing set up for Lauren, though. I'm not sure it's possible to get her into the "peer" program there, at this point. So we'll see what our options are. I think as much as Matthew needs this, Lauren does almost moreso. She's a bright girl- super smart, is no doubt reading beyond what most kids her age can read (and I'm not just saying that. You should hear the things she reads. It's insane). But she really needs to work on her social skills. She needs to get away from mommy, who she has a serious seperation anxiety problem with. LOL (the kid freaks if I go anywhere without her!) And I think she's bored. And I can only stand to do but so much crafting, etc. with her during a day.
