I suppose in a way I can understand why people would do it. I don't condone it, but I could understand it. I mean, let's say your child got killed by a dog. You might hate dogs after that, and even become cruel towards them. Why would this be any different?
This weekend we went to the zoo, where most people looking at the stingrays said the same thing "that's what killed Steve Irwin". (Causing Lauren to repeat it , I might add. Though she already knew about it). I actually got a plush stingray from the gift shop. Why? It just felt right. Here's a pic I took of one in the tank:
