An Australian news site article: "If this image doesn't make you quit, nothing will."

"The confronting shot is part of the next series of seven graphic images that serve as a warnings for smokers.

It will appear on packs from today.

The first series of horror images began appearing on cigarette packs from March 1 this year. "

I'm not sure that would fly in the US. Would definately be interesting to see if that ever were to show up on cig packs here. How does a smoking parent explain this to their children? I suppose one could look at it positively- use it to teach their children "Do as I say, not as I do."

The sad thing is, that I wonder what the odds are of this drastically reducing the number of smokers (in Australia). The picture of the baby is sad indeed. Nobody wants to see a newborn hooked up to a billion tubes. But honestly, it's still removed from the individual smoking, unless they themselves have seen it first hand. There are people who have watched loved ones wither away (over a period of years) from the effects of smoking, and have still continued to smoke. Obviously seeing the worst of what smoking can do to a person is not enough to make somebody quit. (And yes, I do realize it's an addiction, making it damn near impossible for some to quit).
