What would you think if your daughter's school decided to let any child get the Pill?
I know kids are having sex at a much earlier age than they were when I was growing up. That is most obvious. I also know that for years, most schools have been passing out condoms free of charge (I'm assuming just to boys, but I'm not sure?). So one might say "well why not offer the girls something to keep them from getting pregnant?". In response to that, the most obvious answer for me is that being on the Pill does not prevent the spread of STD's. So really, who is it helping?
Secondly.. sure, many girls are starting menstruation at a much earlier age than they were decades ago.. but not all 11 year olds have started. So unless they are being taught sex-ed at that age, and understand all the ins and outs of reproduction, etc.. what is the point of giving them the Pill if they ask for it?
Kids will do what they want, and will hide the fact they're having sex for as long as they can. But is this a good thing? The school system in Maine seems to want to aide children in keeping something as important as this, away from their parents. I think that is wrong.
I can't see into the future, but I do plan to give my children all the information they need to make wise decisions. If I've done my job, my 11 yr olds (and I hope they wait MUCH longer than that!) will not be asking a perfect stranger at some school clinic for contraception.
