Poor Matthew. I went to pick him up from school yesterday, only to find that he was in the nurse's office. Seems he hit his chin on a friend? and his teeth went into his lower lip (well, the skin between the lip and the chin). It was REALLY jacked up. And it hit hard enough to make a mark on the outside as well. The nurse said that it was up to me if I wanted him to have stitches. Quite frankly, the poor kid has enough problems. The thought of him sitting still to get stitches (forget any shot to numb the area first) is completely laughable. The dentist there said his teeth were ok (whew!), and he wasn't actively bleeding.. so they just suggested keeping the area cold, giving him tylenol, etc. I opted out of the stitches, and took him home. I did call his Pediatrician, and they told me the best way to avoid infection, etc.. Lucky for him (I suppose), he's already on antibiotics for his first ear infection. JOY!
Speaking of joy (no, not really), Matthew went in Monday morning to have his lab work completed, at Children's Hospital. His appointment was last Thursday, but the clinic doesn't have a lab. The appointment itself went well, all considered. The doctor seemed comfortable with the Autism diagnosis, though she did say he is in fact high functioning, and he has a lot of positives going for him- such as his speech (which has greatly improved). The only thing she seemed concerned about at the time was the fact he has night terrors, and fairly often at that. He does seem to wake fairly often at night (though hasn't since this appointment), crying inconsolably. He isn't actually awake, doesn't open his eyes, can't be comforted.. it's really rough on all of us, because there is nothing David or I can do to calm him back to sleep. Anyway..
SO we took him to the lab on Saturday. Come to find out he was supposed to fast beforehand. Also, they needed a urine sample. Can you imagine a 3 yr old (who has potty training issues anyway) peeing in a cup? LOL! So they sent us home with a bag to basically tape on his parts, with an opening.. ahem. So Sunday night after he went to sleep, I snuck in and applied the bag. Having dreams he'd wake up, get pissed (literally AND figuratively), and rip it off- spilling it all over his bed. Thank god I heard him wake up, and I ran in and took it right off!
The tests.. It took 3 of us to hold the poor guy. And they took 3-4 vials of blood from him. I'm not sure how many exactly, because they did one arm- but because he was moving too much (even with the restraints), they had to try the other arm. Then they took 3 more vials. He has to go to a Genetics lab in a few weeks. I don't know what the hell they are going to do then, but if it involves needles, we're all in big trouble. Now you see why I had to keep from laughing when the nurse mentioned stitches. Yeah.. you want to tell a 3 yr old who just got his arms all jacked up from needles that he needs one in his mouth? HAHAHAHAH!!! Good one.
