Meet the newest member of our family, Mina:

No, she doesn't have cataracts. LOL

We got her yesterday from the Dog Shelter, after seeing her picture online. D and I have been talking for ages about getting a dog, but wondering when the time would be right- when we'd have the room, when Buddy Buy would be the right age, etc.. The Shelter is currently having a special on dog adoptions, until Easter Sunday. So I decided to look up dogs, based on two important criteria: good with kids, and good with cats. Well, the kids are still somewhat nervous around her, and the cats are petrified. I think they'll all come around. The cats came from a home with dogs, when we got them (7 yrs ago). The kids like dogs, but they're not used to one all excited and playful. (She's actually not a "hyper" dog, just excited to be out of the shelter, I'm guessing).

It was a huge pain in the ass, though. In order to get her, we had to get the cats up to date on their shots. I'm a horrible pet owner, and have neglected this duty. My cats are mostly indoors, and in good health.. but I know they should keep up with rabies shots, etc.. and it's been over 5 yrs since either has seen a vet. So we took them to the vet office at PetSmart, and had them each get their rabies and distemper vaccinations. And despite not being current, the vet said their only real issue that needs to be addressed is gingivitis. Magick actually needs a tooth extracted. :( Once that was all taken care of, we took the cats back home, and went straight back to the Shelter (where we had put Mina on a 24-hr hold). Thankfully all panned out, and she's now in her new home.

D is so cute. He's never had a dog before. But he actually slept in the living room with her last night (partly to keep her out of our room, and partly because she wouldn't sleep otherwise). And he took her for a walk around the block this morning. (Maybe he'll see the benefits for both he and the dog?) We're going this morning back to PetSmart to get a crate and to have Mina's nails trimmed (which she REALLY needs to have done!). I'm so NOT into this whole crate thing- neither is D - but I think it might actually solve some problems- like assuring the cats they won't always have to worry about the dog, and then keeping her confined to a spot at night or when we go somewhere.

Just odd to me. When I was growing up, nobody I knew had a crate or kennel in their home. Here, it's a whole new world. I suppose it has its benefits, but I'm not sure I like confining a dog in a small area like that. Oh well.
