Last night I had a not so pleasant experience driving to the store.
I was out to get milk and cheese, and decided to stop off at the dollar store before hand. I was in the left turn lane waiting for traffic so I could pull into the lot. I quickly noticed that (some of) oncoming traffic was trying to avoid hitting a squirrel that had been hit. From what I could see, it was still alive (his head was up) but a hind leg was sticking out from the rest of the body (reminding me of my cat Alfie when she was alive- her poor broken leg usually sat out from the rest of her when she sat up). I sat there in the turn lane for at least a minute, barely breathing as cars came whizzing by- I didn't want to look, but I wanted to be able to do something in time to help the squirrel avoid being hit again. I think it's possible another car hit it just enough to knock the poor thing into unconsciousness by the time I pulled into the lot. I quickly got out of the car, grabbed my ice scraper (I wanted something long enough to pull the squirrel to safety, and long enough just incase it freaked out and tried to come at me). It took about 30 seconds to get out into the street (pointing at stupid drivers to watch out for the squirrel), ending up with me finally stopping someone so I could do what I was there to do. By that point, the squirrel was dead (Mostly internal injuries from what I could see- I didn't notice any blood). Meanwhile, I'm crying and feeling horrible for the little guy. I really had wanted to help him- I definately didn't want him (live or dead) to keep being hit over and over.
Reminds me of the time I was driving up the 101 from Arcata to the Oregon border. There were frogs all over the highway, which couldn't be avoided. Nothing like crying and hoping beyond hope that you don't hit once- which was an impossible task cuz they were just everywhere. It just sucks.
