"Dr. Shi described baby teeth as the only other naturally shed human organ known to contain stem cells. Stem cells have been reported in bone marrow, brain, skin, hair follicles, and muscle. Extracting them, however, requires surgery or other invasive procedures.

Deciduous teeth would be a noninvasive and more convenient source of postnatal stem cells, Dr. Shi noted.

In addition, stem cells from baby teeth have what Dr. Shi described as an "unbelievably" good ability to grow in laboratory culture dishes, multiplying into the quantities needed for research or treatment.

"I believe that stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth may grow better than any other kind of stem cell," Dr. Shi stated."
